Lord’s Library editors offer this John 5:24 meaning and commentary with supporting Scriptures for your edification.

To obtain a John 5:24 meaning, see the verse in Scripture: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” Spoken by Jesus, this Scripture presents a picture of the assurance of salvation for those who believe in His Blood Atonement.

In this way, it highlights three key aspects of the Gospel: hearing the Word, believing in God through Jesus Christ, and receiving eternal life with full security from condemnation in hell from sin.

Hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the first step toward salvation. Faith comes by hearing; Paul writes it in Romans 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” It is not enough to just hear simply with the ears; one must receive the truth in the heart through believing in what God says about the Gospel.

Jesus Himself illustrates that those who have ears to hear should truly listen and understand, see Matthew 11:15: “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” See also Romans 1:16 to see how the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation to those who believe: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

John 5:24 Meaning

Believing is the means by which one is saved. Jesus says so in John 6:29: “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” As such it is not belief in general spirituality or any other worldly feat, but faith in Christ’s Finished Work on the Cross. See Romans 10:9: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

According to the Scriptures, those who believe are given everlasting life. See what Jesus says in John 10:28: “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” The believer has “passed from death unto life.” This transition is immediate upon faith in Christ. See Paul explain about this in Colossians 1:13: “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”

Further, Jesus promises that those who believe “shall not come into condemnation.” This means that the saved will never face judgment in hell for their sins because Christ has already borne their punishment. Romans 8:1 says: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” The truth is, the wages of sin is death according to Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The penalty has been paid in full by His sacrifice on the cross. See 2 Corinthians 5:21: “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

As we conclude, we hope it is seen that salvation comes only by grace through faith alone. See Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Those who trust in Christ can rest in His promise that they have already passed from death to life.
