The Key Assurance of Salvation Bible Verses & How to Know It

Lord’s Library editors offer an overview of key assurance of salvation verses so you can be secure in your belief in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

There are several key assurance of salvation verses in the Bible that give Christians confidence that eternal life is a clear and present reality for those who trust in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. According to the Scriptures, salvation cannot be secured by works of righteousness, but by grace through faith in the Finished Work of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

The Apostle Paul defines the Gospel in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4: “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

Assurance of Salvation Bible Verses

Jesus Himself declared eternal security in John 5:24: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

You’ll notice the certainty: those who believe are not waiting for life, but already possess it, and have already “passed from death unto life.” John 6:37 confirms it: “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” This shows a present possession, not a conditional promise, confirming that believers can be assured of their standing before God at the moment they place their trust in Christ.

Romans 5:1 as well reads of an assurance through justification by faith: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” The “peace” described is not a feeling but a legal standing before God, declaring the believer righteous on the basis of the Blood Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 2:8-9 reiterates the source of confidence: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

The Apostle John wrote extensively to assure believers of their salvation, most notably in 1 John 5:11-13: “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

The purpose of these verses is clear: that Christians “may know” they have eternal life.

Taking the Scriptures a step further, Jesus proclaimed the security of the believer in John 10:27-29: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

As one can see, the eternal security of the believer is guaranteed by Christ’s own hand and by the Father’s power, not by our ability to hold on.

Paul’s letter to the Ephesians affirms the permanence of salvation. See Ephesians 1:13-14: “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

This “seal” can be understood as a mark of security; a pledge from God Himself that what He has begun He will finish. See Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

Salvation assurance is also tied to the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice at Calvary. See Hebrews 10:10, 10:12, and 10:14: “

  • Hebrews 10:10: “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
  • Hebrews 10:12: “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”
  • Hebrews 10:14: “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.”

Praise God, the Finished Work of Jesus on the Cross provides a perfect salvation for all who believe.

Titus 3:5 is an important reminder: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” Here we see how assurance is grounded in God’s mercy, not in man’s ability to maintain righteousness (because it’s not possible).

See Romans 8:1: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” See next Romans 8:38-39: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Assurance is possible because of the very nature of the Gospel and the perfect promises of God. When one truly believes the Gospel—they are immediately justified, declared righteous, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. See Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 6:19, and Galatians 2:16:

  • Romans 8:9-11: “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”
  • Galatians 2:16: “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Assurance, then, is not presumption but faith in the faithfulness of God and the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice. 2 Timothy 1:12 says, “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” The believer’s confidence is in God’s ability, not their own. Jesus finished the work (John 19:30), and all who trust in Him are saved eternally, “to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved” (Ephesians 1:6).

In summary, the Bible provides overwhelming assurance for those who believe the Gospel. Eternal life, justification, security, and acceptance are all promised as present realities for every believer. These truths are anchored in God’s unchanging character, the completed work of Christ, and the infallible promises of Scripture, so that every believer may confidently say with Paul, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16).
