Lord’s Library editors created this short resource to offer an Adamic Covenant summary with key Bible verses.

The Adamic Covenant is found in Genesis 1:28-30 and Genesis 2:16-17. This covenant was made between God and Adam, and it established the responsibilities and obligations that Adam had as the steward of God’s creation. The Adamic Covenant is significant because it lays the foundation for the relationship between God and humanity, and it establishes the consequences of disobedience.

  • Genesis 1:28-30: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.”
  • Genesis 2:16-17: “And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

God commanded Adam to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and to have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living thing that moves on the earth. In addition, God gave Adam the responsibility of tending and keeping the Garden of Eden, and of naming the animals that God had created.

The Gospel

Adamic Covenant Summary

God warned Adam that he was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and that if he did, he would surely die. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the tree, they experienced the consequences of their disobedience, including shame, separation from God, and physical death.

Through the Adamic Covenant, God established the role of humanity as stewards of his creation, and he gave us the responsibility of caring for the earth and its inhabitants. The Adamic Covenant also demonstrates God’s justice and holiness, as he holds humanity accountable for their disobedience.

Notably, the Adamic Covenant points forward to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus offers a way for humanity to be reconciled to God through the forgiveness of sin by believing the Gospel. The Adamic Covenant serves as a reminder of humanity’s responsibility to live in obedience to God.

The Promise: This covenant was made between God and Adam, and it established the responsibilities and obligations that Adam had as the steward of God’s creation. The Adamic Covenant is significant because it lays the foundation for the relationship between God and humanity, and it establishes the consequences of disobedience.
