Lord’s Library editors created this short profile on CJ Stroud’s faith in Jesus Christ as an encouragement and to highlight Christians doing bold things in popular culture.
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, a rising star in the NFL, has not only been recognized for his prowess on the field but also for his public pronouncement of the Lord Jesus Christ on television. After securing a win over the Indianapolis Colts and leading his team to the playoffs, Stroud, born Coleridge Bernard, openly expressed his gratitude to the Lord, attributing his success to God’s grace, saying: “It’s a blessing, I can’t do nothing but just thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ… I’m just blessed enough to be the vessel that Christ picked to lead this great franchise”.
Stroud’s journey from a small-town kid to NFL prominence is a testament to his resilience and clearly, faith. Raised in a family that built a church, Stroud was raised with a Christian worldview. Despite facing familial challenges and the hardship of his father’s (who was also a former pastor) incarceration, Stroud remained steadfast, saying: “I think I thrive now at this age, just understanding that doing the right thing is the right way and letting God lead your life is the best way. That’s what I learned from my father.”
CJ Stroud’s Faith in Jesus Christ
Throughout his rookie season with the Texans, Stroud has consistently used his platform to glorify God. He has been vocal about relying on prayer and the belief that God’s grace is sufficient even in the face of adversity. “For me, it’s a lot of prayer,” he said, “A lot of just knowing that God wouldn’t put anything on me that I can’t handle”.” See 1 Corinthians 10:13:
- 1 Corinthians 10:13: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Stroud’s commitment to using football as a means to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ shows wisdom far beyond his years. He views his career as an opportunity to share his faith and inspire others, stating, “This is bigger than just ball, and if I have to use football for my purpose — to spread the Gospel and the life of Jesus Christ — then I’ll do that. And I think that’s what God wants”.
