Lord’s Library editors created this guide to the best books on the Apostles’ Creed to help you narrow your search.
The Apostles’ Creed is a foundational Christian statement of faith. It begins with the affirmation of belief in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth from Genesis 1:1: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” This opening line begins a declaration of faith that spans from creation to the expectation of eternal life, grounding Christian belief in the omnipotence and providence of God.
The Creed progresses to affirm belief in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, and on the third day, He rose again from the dead. As such, it encapsulates the core of the Gospel, reflecting Paul’s summary of the Christian message in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
The Creed concludes with affirmations of belief in the Holy Ghost, the Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. These statements highlight the work of the Spirit, the unity and mission of the Church, and the hope of salvation and resurrection.
See Romans 8:11: “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
